Understanding Atrial Fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common cardiac arrhythmia characterized by a rapid and irregular heart rhythm caused by disorganized electrical activity in the atria. This leads to ineffective atrial contraction and can significantly impair blood flow, increasing the risk of serious complications such as stroke, heart failure, and peripheral embolism. AF may present in different forms, including paroxysmal (intermittent), persistent (lasting more than 7 days), and permanent, with symptoms ranging from palpitations and shortness of breath to chest pain and syncope. The condition is often associated with underlying health issues such as hypertension, ischemic heart disease, valvular disorders, infections, or metabolic imbalances, making early diagnosis and risk assessment essential.

Treatment and Our Innovation

Treatment of atrial fibrillation focuses on controlling heart rate, restoring normal rhythm when appropriate, and preventing stroke through anticoagulation therapy. Management strategies may include medications such as beta-blockers, antiarrhythmic drugs, or anticoagulants, as well as procedures like electrical cardioversion or catheter ablation in selected patients. Long-term care also involves lifestyle modifications and careful monitoring of risk factors. Despite advances in therapy, AF remains a complex condition requiring individualized care. ACCREA Medical Robotics is currently working on a revolutionary cardiac surgery solution that has the potential to significantly improve treatment outcomes and redefine the standard of care for patients with atrial fibrillation.
